An attack which left a Derry taxi driver badly shaken after an attempt was made to strangle him, has been described as “senseless” by Derry MLA Pat Ramsey.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, 3 November, but details have just been made public by the local taxi drivers’ union.
The driver was left badly shaken when two passengers, who he had picked up in Bridgend and drove to Strabane, refused to pay and turned violent with one of them grabbing him by the throat in an arm lock and attempted to choke him.
SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey condemned those responsible and called on anyone with information to contact the PSNI.
Mr Ramsey said: “Any attack on a member of the taxi profession or any other public service is senseless, taxi drivers often work in difficult circumstances and their safety should be a concern for all throughout the city and beyond.”
Cllr Ramsey concluded: “I want to send my best wishes to the driver involved in this incident, and wish him a speedy recovery. Anyone with any information of this attack should report it to their local PSNI.”
