Police in Derry have warned they will seize and scrap quads and off-road bikes being driven children in public areas of the city.
The warning comes in the run-up to Christmas with police calling on parents to “think twice” when considering buying their children a quad or off-road bike.
A police spokesperson said parents thinking about purchasing such items should consider had they a “suitable area” for it to be used, ie a suitable field with permission from the owner and had they the correct safety equipment.
The spokesperson added: “If not and your child is found using the off road vehicle in a public area are you prepared for the vehicle to be seized and scrapped and you possibly held liable for permitting driving offences?”
The spokesperson highlighted the environmental damage such vehicles could cause as a result of being driven around public green areas.
The spokesperson concluded: “Most importantly, do you realise the danger to the driver and others when they are misused. Unfortunately we, the police have seen drivers, passengers and pedestrians with serious injuries and fatalities related to these vehicles.”
