Four community groups on a Derry estate have teamed up with a local artist to reimage a former graffiti splattered entrance to their area.
The artwork representing the history and diversity of the Strathfoyle estate was unveiled by the Mayor of Derry, Cllr Martin Reilly. It is the culmination of eight weeks of collaborative work by the groups and artist Sean O’Donnell.
The wall, which was previously the target for graffiti and a hotspot for anti-social behaviour, now displays a multi-lingual welcome to all residents and visitors to the estate.
The reimaging is the first joint venture by Strathfoyle Community Association, Enagh Youth Forum, Strathfoyle Women’s Activity group and the Tiny Tots community playgroup as they embark on the Housing Executive’s Shared Communities Programme.
The artwork project, jointly funded by the Housing Executive’s Community Cohesion Unit and Derry City Council’s Good Relations department, depicts elements of life that are integral to the estate’s past, present and future.
Mayor Reilly said Derry City Council was delighted to have partnered with the Housing Executive in funding thee community based reimaging project.
He added: “The Strathfoyle community should be commended for its decision to come together, ensuring that everyone has a role in the shared future of their area.”
Avril McAllister, the Housing Executive area manager for West, said: “The entrance feature brightens up the estate and it is lovely that children from the area were involved and can see their work every day.”
