One of Derry’s oldest youth clubs is to get a new £2.3 million building.
Education Minister has confirmed St Mary’s Youth Club at Fanad Drive in the city’s Greggan Estate is to be provided funding for the development.
The Minister also confirmed Glenview Community Centre in the Glen area was to receive £150,000. Funding was also announced for projects at the YMCA and Ebrington Church Youth COuncil in the Waterside.
Commenting on the confirmation for the St Mary’s development, Sinn Fein Cllr for the area, Kevin Campbell said the announcement was “fantastic news” for the people of Creggan and the wider Derry public.
He said the investment would allow a “modern” youth facility to be built right in the heart of the community in an area of great social and economic need.
He added: “It will provide a contribution to the invaluable role of building a strong community, and educating and empowering young people. In the context of the community and the wider society, all the evidence shows that investment in youth services is money well spent.”
The £150,000 investment at Glenview Community Centre has been welcomed by Northland Sinn Fein Cllr Barney O’Hagan.
He said the announcement was “something good” for the area.
He added: “The community centre is well used by everybody, bringing people together. It shows how work at a local grassroots level can make a difference.”
