The signing off of £1.2 million funding for the Museum of Free Derry in the Bogside by the Department of Trade and Investment is a “positive step forward” for the area, local Sinn Fein MLA Raymond McCartney has said.
Pointing out the investment brought to £6 million the amount of funding announced for the Bogside and Creggan areas of the city.
Mr McCartney said: “People in the city will welcome the news that the undue delay around the funding application for the Museum of Free Derry has been resolved. It will now make it possible to move the project forward and get other match funding applications which will bring in a total of £2 million.”
Mr McCartney said the investment would not only help the Museum but would help lift the tourist product in the greater Bogside area.
It comes after confirmation from Minister Carál Ní Chuilín that £2 million is being allocated to the Daisyfield/Showgrounds elements of the Foyle Valley Gateway Masterplan as part of the regeneration of the Brandywell and surrounding area and announcement from Education Minister John O’Dowd that £2,384,073 will be invested in Mary’s Youth Club, Creggan and a number of other projects across the city recieving funding.
Mr McCartney said: “It’s very important that as a city and region we continue to lobby that such investments happen. The processes to get results can be long and protracted but if we persevere £6 million of investment on key projects proves it can happen.”
