News that Derry is to get an ice rink over the festive period has been welcomed by Cllr Elisha McCallion, chairperson of the Development Committee on Derry City Council.
The “real ice” rink will be situated at Ebrington Square in the Waterside from 12 December to 19 January.
Provided by a private enterprise, the 600 square metre “Legenderry on Ice” will be set up in a marquee.
Sinn Féin Councillor Elisha McCallion has welcomed the attraction saying it would prove popular.
Cllr McCallion had called for such an attraction in September last but, at the time, it was feared it would not happen as a result of the city’s Christmas preparations being at an advanced stage.
Cllr McCallion said: “There has been a popular demand for an ice rink to be located in Derry around the festive period particularly this year with so much going on in the city. As well as being great for local people to enjoy it will also attract more people into Derry from right across the North West which will be a great bonus to the retail and hospitality sectors.”
It is all about what the rate payers want in and around the city at Christmas time. We have already enhanced the likes of the Christmas switch on, as Chairperson of Development Committee I, along with Derry City Council, committed to making Christmas in the city as memorable as possible.”
