Mick Cooke is no longer in the running for the vacant manager’s job at Derry City.
The former Drogheda United boss, who was due to be interviewed for the Brandywell post, has taken over the managerial reins at Athlone Town.
Former Athlone manager, who has publicly stated he would relish the opportunity to manage the Candy Stripes, is understood to have been interviewed on Friday for the position vacated by the departure of Declan Devine.
The delay in appointing a new team boss has resulted on City striker delaying signing a new contract at the Brandywell.
Rafter’s contract ran out at the end of the season and while he has been offered new terms to keep at City he said he wanted to wait and see who the new manager was going to be.
Meanwhile, City midfielder Barry McNamee has gone on a week’s trial with Sky Bet League One side Brentford, manager by former German international and Manchester City striker Uwe Rossler.
The Donegal man, who has a year left on his contract with the Brandywell club, had a trial with Championship side Nottingham Forest last year but a move to the City Ground never materialised.
