Strabane has received an early Christmas present with the announcement of £2.2million funding for a new pedestrian and cycle bridge in the town.
When complete the bridge will link Ballycolman with Townsend Street.
The total cost of the bridge project is £3.2million with £875,000 being provided through the Department for Regional Development’s Active Travel programme.
Confirming the funding, Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland said the bridge would provide alternative routes across the river for pedestrians and cyclists, creating better access to facilities and opening up opportunities for the residents of Strabane.
The announcement has been welcomed by the chairperson of Strabane District Council, Councillor Ruairí McHugh who said the development would create an attractive route that would encourage more walking and cycling on local journeys.
He concluded: “It will link our communities together and improve health and wellbeing locally.”
Construction is due to begin next summer and the bridge is expected to take 12 months to complete.
