The announcement that a new initiative has been launched to provide playing pitches for soccer and Gaelic in the Creggan Burn Park area of Derry has been welcomed by Sinn Fein Councillor Barney O’Hagan.
A task force has been set up under the auspices of the Outerwest Neighbourhood Partnership Board through their Physical Renewal group and involves representation from the Glen Development Initiative, Rosemount Resource Centre, Oxford Football Club, Doire Colmcille and Derry City Council.
Speaking at a site visit to examine the possible plans Cllr O’Hagan said Derry City Council was currently examining the feasibility of the pitches, determining the water plain and levels as well as access routes.
He added: “I believe there is an opportunity to develop the sporting capacity in the Outerwest area through the provision of possibly two full-size pitches and a multi-sports area capable for soccer, gaelic and multi-purpose use.”
Cllr O’Hagan said there was a high demand for sporting areas in the city in general and in the Outerwest area in particular and he said the proposed development was complementing the “Council’s Pitches Strategy.”
