Bus services to the Ballymagroarty estate in Derry are to be restricted as a result of last night’s incident in which a bomb was placed on a bus in the area.
The female driver of the bus has been widely praised for her heroic actions after she drove the bus out of the highly-populated estate.
A masked man had boarded the bus and placed the bomb in the seat directly behind the driver and ordered her to drive to police headquarters on Strand Road in the city centre.
However, the driver pulled the vehicle into a bus stop at Northland Road less than a mile away where she abandoned it before alerting police.
The woman’s bosses at Translink are among the many who have praised her for her actions.
A Translink spokesperson said she had followed proper procedure by getting passengers off the bus and driving it to a safe as place as possible.
However, as a result of the incident Translink have said bus services to Ballymagroarty will be restricted until further notice with only the bottom end of the estate being serviced.
Sinn Fein have also condemned the incident and praised the driver and have said they are due to meet with Translink management in the city this afternoon in an attempt to have the full service resumed to Ballymagroarty.
