SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has presented a parliamentary tribute to the family of the late poet laureate Seamus Heaney who died in September last, aged 74.
Mr Durkan’s Early Day Motion in the Speaker’s House in the Houses of Parliament was signed by over 130 MPs.
The current and former Northern Ireland Secretaries of States were among those who attended the tribute to the Bellaghy poet’s widow Marie and daughter Catherine.
Mr Durkan said: “After Seamus Heaney sadly passed away I tabled an Early Day Motion in Parliament which was signed by over 130 MPs.
“The Clerk of the House of Commons said it was the most poetic motion that was ever tabled.
“It was also the third most signed Early Day Motion of this parliamentary session – which was a tremendous tribute to Seamus and a mark of what he means to people from all parties and all parts of England, Scotland and Wales – as well as in Northern Ireland.
“I was honoured to meet Marie and Catherine who graciously received the presentation version of the motion in the Speaker’s House.
“The family were very touched by it, just as they have been touched by all of the expressions of sadness and condolences from people throughout the world.
“Marie and Catherine also met with MPs who signed the parliamentary motion – including current and former Northern Ireland Secretaries of State – who wanted to offer their personal condolences.”
Mr Durkan concluded: “This was a very nice moment – with no party politics – but rather a bit of poignancy in remembering such a brilliant poet and a good Derry man.”
