The fifth security alert in the Gobnascale area of Derry’s Waterside has ended with police confirming it as an “elaborate hoax – just like the previous four.
British army bomb disposal experts who attended the latest incident have removed the object for further forensic examination.
Residents who had been moved out of their homes have been allowed to return and roads which had been closed in the area reopened.
There is widespread anger in the area following the alerts during which dozens of residents were moved from their homes after police responded to suspect devices being found in five different locations.
According to locals, one of the devices was lifted from a garden by a member of the public and taken to a “safer place.”
She said: “They are frustrated and angry. They are living in fear not knowing if these alerts are real or not.”
