The Housing Executive has been called on to “urgently” install smoke alarms in the stairwells of flats in the Carnhill area of Derry.
The call comes a week after 13 people, including a one year old boy, were rescued by firefighters were unable to get out of a block of six flats in the area due to a fire in the stairwell.
No one was injured in the incident although the father of the infant, Richard Meenan, was taken to hospital for treatment for the effects of smoke inhalation.
Sinn Fein Councillor said he visited the residents involved and had been told, while smoke alarms were fitted in each flat, there were non in the hallway or landings of the complex.
Cllr Hassan said: “I am making an urgent appeal to the Housing Executive as a priority to install modern alarms in each of the complex of flats. There could have of been a tragedy here last Friday but for the bravery of the person who raised the alarm”
He concluded: “The provision of fire alarms must also be a priority for social housing providers and landlords alike in the city.”
