Thousands packed into Ebrington Square in Derry’s Waterside earlier tonight for the switch-on of the city’s Christmas lights.
The turn-on was performed by Santa assisted by Mayor Cllr Martin Reilly.
It was the biggest turn-out ever for the switching on of the city’s festive illuminations.
It was the first time the switch on was held in Ebrington. Organisers, Derry City Council, took the decision to move the event from its traditional location in Guildhall Square to cope with the large numbers expected.
At one stage compere, BBC Radio Foyle’s Teresa Craig, asked those already in the Square to move forward to allow more room for those trying to get in.
After turning on the lights, Santa distributed sweets to children before heading back to the North Pole to prepare for the `’big day.”
This year’s Christmas illuminations coincide with the city’s first ever Festival of Trees which saw 120 different tress also light up.
