A new multi-pound accommodation complex for women and children fleeing domestic abuse has been officially opened in Derry.
The opening of Ashleywood House in Ardmore has been welcomed by Foyle SDLP MP Mark Durkan.
The conversion of a stone stable block for APEX Housing Association has created 15 fully self-contained apartments to be used and managed by Foyle Women’s Aid.
Mr Durkan, who accompanied keynote speaker Baroness Angela Smith (a life peer and former Labour Party Minister), said the “impressive” units would offer a safe and secure refuge for women and children who have been the victims of domestic abuse.
Mr Durkan added: “It is great to see a facility developed in a way that has more than matched the ambitious plans originally outlined and shown.
“I have been delighted to meet some of those who will avail of these impressive units.”
Mr Durkan concluded: “This really is a quality environment which will support people who have undergone some terrible experiences.”
Marie Brown, Director of Foyle Women’s Aid, said Ashleywood House would serve the people of of the North West for many years.
