A short film warning of the tragic consequences that could arise as a result of becoming involved in an argument or fight has been launched by police in Derry.
“Once Punch Can Kill” targets young males between 15 – 25 and highlights how death or serious injury can occur as a result of alcohol-fuelled heated disagreements.
Since 2004, 21 people have died as a result of “one punch attacks” in Northern Ireland – with many more seriously injured.
The film, produced by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and the Youth Justice Agency and launched as part of the Foyle Film Festival, will also be used as part of an educational package to be rolled out across the North as part of police strategy to reduce violent crime.
The objectives of the film are:
• To prevent serious crime and protect people, particularly young people from harm.
• To educate young people about the consequences of being involved in serious crime.
• To improve the knowledge of young people about reporting serious crime and other means of support.
PSNI Detective Chief Inspector Karen Baxter said the film had been launched ahead of what was traditionally the busiest time of the year for local nightclubs, pubs and restaurants as revellers celebrate the festive season.
DCI Baxter added: “One punch attacks can and do happen. With the launch of our new film, we are encouraging young males to be mindful of their safety when they are out at night.
“Unfortunately, the majority of one punch incidents are fuelled by excessive alcohol consumption and can have a devastating impact on the victim and their family. In such cases the offender will likely face a murder or manslaughter charge and have a criminal record for the rest of their life. This type of conviction can impose significant restrictions on an individual’s future.
“Raising awareness of the dangers of One Punch incidents is important and that is why we have produced the short film and the accompanying poster so that young people across Northern Ireland are aware of their safety while out at night. Our message is to enjoy your night out, but please remember that ‘One Punch Can Kill’.”
Anne Connolly, chairperson of the Northern Ireland Policing Board, said: “This short film portrays the potential consequences of a night out and how a split second action or reaction can shatter lives.
“No one wants a knock on the door with the terrible news that someone close to them has either been the victim or the perpetrator of a violent crime.”
She concluded: “The statistics show that alcohol is a factor in violent crime incidents and with the countdown to the Christmas party season underway we hope this campaign will make people think about their actions to ensure a good night out does not end badly.”
Paula Jack, chief executive of the Youth Justice Agency, said: “This film reaches out to young people to highlight the unforeseen consequences of a violent act and the impact it can have.”
She concluded: “It will alert young people to the dangers of getting themselves into situations which could lead to serious injury or death. I am pleased that the Youth Justice Agency has contributed directly to the production of this DVD.”
