The group campaigning against the siting of a gasification recycling plant in Derry are to hold a meeting in the Rosemount area of the city this week.
Zero Waste North West (ZWNW) will host the meeting in Brooke Park Bowling Clubhouse at 7.30pm on Wednesday to highlight concerns about the development of a gasification/incinerator at Strathfoyle.
Gasification plants operate by heating waste to produce a gas that is used to generate steam.
ZWNW say the proposed plant would be “huge” and would become a “dumping ground” for waste from six other borough councils across the North.
A spokesperson for the group said plans to build the incinerator in the Strathfoyle area had “stirred memories” of Du Pont’s attempt to construct a toxic waste incinerator in the city in the early 1990s.
The spokesperson added: “That attempt was defeated by a citywide campaign against the threat to make the city a centre for burning waste in a process that produced toxic fumes and ash as by-products.
“Is it time to consider such a public campaign again, given that everyone shares the air affected by emissions from gasifying/burning waste?”
Wednesday night’s meeting will feature a panel of residents from the area, made up of Sheila Downey, Conor O’Kelly, Marian Farrell and Dave Duggan, who will talk about their involvement in the 1990s campaign.
Those in attendance will be told of realistic alternatives to gasification/incineration.
The spokesperson said: “The meeting will then focus on the concerns of local residents and further actions we might take.”
