The opening in Derry of a new multi-pound accommodation complex for women and children fleeing domestic abuse has been welcomed by local Sinn Councillor Eric McGinley.
Ashleywood House in Ardmore, where the conversion of a stone stable block for APEX Housing Association has created 15 fully self-contained apartments, will be used and managed by Foyle Women’s Aid.
Cllr McGinley, who attended the opening, said: “The opening of Ashleywood House and Ashleywood Mews completed the first phase of a multi-million pounds development of Foyle Women’s Aid services.
“Ashleywood House offers a range of specialist programmes and activities to support victims of all types of abuse within a safe and peaceful location whilst Ashleywood Mews provides independent housing units for 12 families fleeing domestic abuse.”
He concluded: “Having heard an outline of future plans for the complex at the opening ceremony I would take this opportunity to commend Women’s Aid for the magnificent service it has provided and will continue to provide for women and children in times of often desperate need.”
