Members of the public are being warned to stay from a “promotion” on social media offering a free £500 shopping voucher.
Thousands of followers of Facebook have been following posted instructions in the belief they were getting their hands on the “free” offer from ASDA.
However, the store has itself taken to Facebook to warn that the “promotion” is a scam with the possible intent of gaining personal information.
The ASDA post reads: “WARNING: Please do not respond to any Facebook messages inviting you to claim a ‘Free £500 ASDA Voucher.’ This is nothing to do with us and may be an attempt to capture your personal information. Please warn your friends.”
One Derry woman, who did not wish to be named, revealed she almost fell for the scam.
She said: “I followed the instructions and it told me I had won a £500 shopping voucher. I couldn’t believe it and started running round the kitchen in excitement. However, when I continued to follow the instructions I realised something was not right.”
The woman, from the Waterside, added: “I looked up the ASDA phone number and phoned them. The person who answered said she knew nothing about it but would check it out and get back to. Which she did only to tell me it had nothing to do with them.”
