The provision of an extra train service to operate between Derry and Coleraine from the New Year is proof there is a “growing demand” for rail services in the North West, a local councillor has claimed.
An extra train will operate on the line from 6 January increasing the number of trains from 59 to 64 each way per week.
The extra service has been welcomed by Sinn Fein Waterside Councillor Bridget Meehan.
Cllr Meehan said: “When Translink carried out the annual review of their timetable, they identified the opportunity to further enhance the train service during the evening peak times on week days.
“About 7,000 people already use this section of the line every week and the new additional service will provide a better service and more convenience for all passengers.”
Cllr Meehan said the additional service showed there was a “growing demand” for rail services in the North West.
She added: This demand will continue to grow as more investment is made into the rail infrastructure.”
Cllr Meehan concluded: “Sinn Féin will continue to lobby to ensure that the northwest is on the receiving end of further investment in rail.
