The development of a new food superstore in Derry has been given the green light by Environment Minister Mark H Durkan.
The Minister has recommended planning approval for a new mixed use re-development scheme on lands at Rossdowney Road in the Waterside.
Currently occupied by Niche Drinks, the proposals include a new food superstore with ancillary non-food, business innovation centre and the retention of the former school building for use as a crèche.
The proposal, by Niche Drinks, also includes car parking; servicing and associated landscaping.
Mr Durkan said the “significant regeneration” project would inject investment into the locality and benefit both the local area and the Waterside as a whole, by creating a variety of employment and community uses within the site.
He added: ““This is a boost for Derry. The significant investment demonstrates a confidence in the local economy. My vision is for the DOE to build a better environment and a stronger economy. This decision will help do that.”
Derry City Council discuss the proposal at its next Planning Committee meeting on 3 December next.
This application is related to a previous application that was recommended for approval for the relocation of the existing distillery business to a new site at Campsie.
