The ball is rolling on a new £1 million leisure facility planned for Derry after Environment Minister gave the go ahead for the development at Bay Road.
Fortuna Enterprises, the group behind the Brunswick complex at Pennyburn in the city, is looking to construct nine floodlit synthetic grass pitches and a clubhouse adjacent to the Bay Road Nature Reserve.
The development will also included associated car parking, floodlighting and fencing.
Giving the go ahead for the development, Mr Durkan said the development had the potential of creating 20 jobs.
He said as well as injecting investment in the locality it would benefit the “city as a whole.”
He added: “It will help to improve health and wellbeing, will provide excellent sporting facilities for the young people in the area and will help Derry to continue to produce fine young players.”
Derry City Council’s planning committee is due to discuss the development on Tuesday next.
Councillors are expected to give the project their backing after no objections to the development were received by the DOE which received five letters and a petition of support for the scheme.
