BBC Radio Ulster/Foyle are to celebrate Derry’s City of Culture year with a special one-off live broadcast from the city later this month.
BBC Radio Ulster’s Marie-Louise Muir and BBC Radio Foyle’s Mark Patterson will host the A Year In A Night concert live from the nostalgic surroundings of St Columb’s Hall at 8.00pm on Thursday 12 December as they relive highlights of the City of Culture year and celebrate some of the extraordinary talent which has emerged from the celebrations.
Under the award-winning musical direction of Frank Gallagher, the line-up will include: Soak, Little Bear, The Clameens, pianist Ruth McGinley, tenor John Porter, The Music Promise Choir, City of Culture’s Musician in Residence Neil Cowley and a special meeting of traditions as Tattoo and Fleadh musicians combine.
Other special guests will include Gino Lupari, actress Nuala Hayes, and Derry’s own Anita Robinson.
The concert will also feature a special moment of reflection on the passing of Seamus Heaney.
Tickets for A Year In A Night are complimentary and will be allocated following a random draw.
Ticket applications can be made online at bbc.co.uk/tickets until this Monday 2 December at 5.00pm.
No applications will be accepted after this closing date and duplicate applications will not be considered. Tickets will be limited to two per person.
Marie-Louise Muir said it had been an “amazing experience” to see so much talent both emerge from and visit her hometown throughout the year.
She added: “I can’t believe the year is nearly over, but what a wonderful closing concert from St Columb’s Hall to bring the year to an end.
“Like City of Culture year itself, our line-up for the night is varied, with something for everyone. It was a pleasure opening the year on BBC Radio Ulster presenting Sons & Daughters with some of Derry’s biggest names and I’m equally excited to be part of this closing concert showcasing some of the city’s best new talent.”
Mark Patterson said despite the “fantastic” events that had already taken place it was the upcoming A Year in the Night that he was looking forward to most.
He said: “What a year that was … Prestigious festivals, headline gigs, world-class showcases, from Fleadh, Tattoo and One Big Weekend.
“However it’s this one, in the intimate and historic setting of old St Columb’s Hall, that I most eagerly anticipate. Every guest on the programme will tell you why this city is in their cultural DNA. I simply cannot wait.”
A Year In A Night can be heard live on BBC Radio Ulster/Foyle on Thursday, 12 December 12 at 8.00pm. on92-95FM and DAB digital radio, digital TV and online at bbc.co.uk/radioulster.
