The first of 500 guests are arriving at the Ebrington art exhibition in Derry ahead of the announcement of this year’s winner of the highly prestigious Turner Prize.
The winner will be announced towards the end of a half hour programme to be screened live on Channel 4 from the Derry venue from 7.30pm.
The programme will be presented by Irish actress Saoirse Ronan.
The work of the four nominees have been on display at a new £2.4 exhibition centre since 23 October last – the first time the exhibition has been held outside of England in its 29 year history.
The exhibition will run until 5 January next.
The finalists are Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Tino Sehgal, Laure Prouvost and David Shrigley.
The winner will take away the £25,000 top prize with the three other nominees each getting £5,000.
Artist nominations are invited every year and judged by an independent jury.
The 2013 jury is Annie Fletcher, Curator of Exhibitions at the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; Susanne Gaensheimer, Director of Frankfurt’s Museum of Modern Art; Declan Long, writer and lecturer at National College of Art and Design, Dublin; Ralph Rugoff, Director of Hayward Gallery, London; the jury is chaired by Penelope Curtis, Director of Tate Britain.
Favourite to take the top prize is Tino Sehgal whose works consist purely of live encounters between people and demonstrate a keen sensitivity to their institutional context.
Through participatory means, they test the limits of artistic material and audience perception in a new and significant way.
