No funding will be available for the widening of one of Derry’s busiest roads until at least 2016, Derry City Council is to be hold.
In its Interim Report to be presented to tomorrow’s monthly meeting of the Council’s Regional Services Committee, the Northern Division of Roads Services says whilst work recently resumed to complete the preliminary design and assessment of the A2 Buncrana Road scheme, there were no plans to proceed to publication draft statutory orders.
The proposed scheme, announced on 10 February 2009, will see the widening of the existing road from Pennyburn roundabout to the Skeoge link roundabout to four lanes and provide a dual carriageway from Skeoge roundabout to the border with the Republic.
The report says: “There is no provision in the 2011-2015 NI budget for construction of the scheme and spending beyond the current budget period on schemes such as the Buncrana Road improvement will depend on the funding made available by the Executive through the investment strategy for Northern Ireland 2011-2021 process.”
