A Derry IRA man shot dead by the British army 40 years ago today will be remembered at a commemoration ceremony to be held in the city tonight close to where he was killed.
Joseph Walker (18), the eldest of a family of 10, was shot dead by British troops at Central Drive in Creggan on 3 December 1973.
He was killed when soldiers returned fire after he had shot at them from a hijacked taxi close to his Cromore Gardens home.
Two young girls who were also in the taxi were wounded but managed to escape.
Following the killing the Provisional IRA condemned the killing and said it would to take retaliatory action “to avenge this latest assault by the army on Irish people.”
Main speaker at tonight’s commemoration, to take place at 7.00pm at the republican monument at Central Drive, will be veteran republican Gerry McCartney.
Following the event, being organised by the Creggan Monument Committee, a function will take place the Crescent Bar on Beechwood Avenue.
