The findings of the Smithwick Tribunal which concluded that Garda officers colluded in the IRA murders of two senior RUC officers has been described as “deeply perturbing” by Foyle SDLP MP Mark Durkan.
Chief Superintendent Harry Breen and Superintendent Bob Buchanan were shot dead on March 20 1989 near the border in south Armagh, shortly after a meeting with gardai in Dundalk, Co Louth.
Mr Durkan said: “The findings of this inquiry are deeply perturbing and need to be registered as such by all democrats who value the rule of law and its proper application and protection by the police.
“Those of us who have rightly protested about the evidence of collusion by security forces in the North, much of it structural, should be no less aggrieved by this grave finding.”
Mr Durkan concluded: “Equally, those who are coming on loud about this telling report need to address themselves to the compelling evidence of collusion in so many murders in the North which they pointedly ignore, dismiss or excuse.”
Gregory Campbell, DUP MP for East Derry, described the report as “explosive” and confirmed “what many of us knew.”
