SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has described 11% pay rise recommended by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) as “scandalous.”
Parliamentary watchdog IPSA is set to recommend a rise of £7,600 to £74,000 to come in after the 2015 election.
Mr Durkan said: “I will be opposing this increase which breaks the public sector pay policy that Parliament has imposed itself on everybody else.
“IPSA need to be reasonable and equitable – especially at a time when there is such a squeeze on other public service incomes.
“People are right to say that such an increase would be scandalous in the current climate.”
Mr Durkan concluded: “MPs should oppose this increase which varies so markedly from what the position is for people working elsewhere in the public sector.”
