A 2014 calendar aimed at celebrating the rich diversity of people, traditions and cultures in the Derry City Council area is now available free of charge.
The calendar includes images by the winning entries from the amateur photography competition on the themes of “One City – Diverse Cultures” and “Faces in local Places.”
Mayor of Derry Cllr Martin Reilly said the production of the calendar was in keeping with the Council’s commitment to promote good relations and council’s vision to “Make a meaningful difference locally to attitudes and actions, policies and places in a society in transition from conflict to lasting peace.”
He added: “This calendar is a great way of celebrating our city’s diversity and the fact that our Council area is home to over 50 different national identities. It is colourful and dynamic and depicts, through images including those who were successful in the competition, how our city has progressed to embrace a variety of cultures and traditions.”
Angela Askin, Community Relations Officer with Derry City Council described the calendar as being “Of the people and for the people.”
She added: “This is not a calendar targeted at tourists or presenting a glossy marketed image of the city – the images are often of community events and everyday people in everyday local places.
“It shows the richness of diversity here and gives you a positive feel for inclusion and culture through the eyes of amateur photographers who entered the competition. Our thanks go to everyone who took the time to submit a photograph into the competition and engage in the process – this ‘Diverse City’ calendar could not have come to fruition without you.”
Six thousand free copies of the calendar are now available for the public to pick up.
Copies will also be posted to schools and community groups and (while stocks last) members of the public can call in to pick up a copy at Derry City Council offices on Strand Road, the Guildhall or at the Shared Future Centre in the Waterside
