A man is lucky to be alive after suffering two broken legs and other injuries when he was struck by a car on the Derry to Buncrana road last night while trying to stop raiders from stealing his truck.
The man was attending a wake in Burnfoot in Inishowen around 7.30pm when he noticed two men close to his truck.
A Garda spokesperson said as he approached the men, they got into another car which was parked close to his vehicle.
He tried to stop the men and managed to hang on to the door of their car as they headed towards the Bridgend roundabout going towards Derry.
However, as the man held on the driver swerved into the path of an oncoming car which struck the man hanging onto the car.
Gardai said the man was lucky to be alive.
The man was taken to hospital and is believed to have suffered two broken legs and other injuries.
Gardai have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
