The creation of 192 by Japanese IT firm Fujitsu at its Derry office is “wonderful news” for the city, according Philip Gilliland, president of the local Chamber of Commerce.
Mr Gilliland said the creation of 177 jobs and 15 apprenticeships by Fujitsu was “the right decision, which we are sure is the right decision for Fujitsu as well as being the right decision for Derry.”
The new jobs will see Fujitsu more than double the size of its operation in the Derry and in doing so, Mr Gilliland said the firm was reaffirming the economic strategy pursued by the city, that was included in the One Plan and which had been strongly endorsed and argued for by the Chamber of Commerce.
He added: “”The future of our city must increasingly be as a high skilled, high income, high value added economy, which majors in the digital and creative sectors.
“This is embodied by Fujitsu’s presence and expansion, just as it is by other large local employers Seagate, Allstate and Kofax, as well as many other smaller and expanding local businesses that operate in this sector.”
Mr Gilliland concluded: “It is the growth of this sector, supported by an increase in the number of locally qualified graduates and other skilled workers that specialise in the digital and creative disciplines, that will provide a prosperous economy for our city.”
