The people of the North West have been called on to consider buying an online gift from the charity Trócaire this Christmas to help the current aid appeal for the Philippines which was hit by Typhoon Haiyan and aid efforts other countries such as Kenya, Somalia and Guatemala/Honduras.
The call comes from Derry Sinn Féin Councillor Colly Kelly as the charity celebrates the 40th anniversary of its formation.
Cllr Kelly said: “Trocaire now works in over 20 countries on issues including livelihoods, human rights, gender equality, HIV, climate change and emergency relief. It is currently involved in raising funds for the Philippines which was hit by Typhoon Haiyan which rocked the eastern part of the country.
“Many Philippine nationals have made Ireland their home and do vital work, particularly in the caring professions in hospitals and nursing homes.
“All too often in the rush towards Christmas people buy presents which in many cases are never opened or used.
“This year I would ask them to consider buying a Trócaire gift which will only help people in the Philippines but also places like Kenya, Somalia and Guatemala/Honduras.
“There is an online facility which means people don’t even have to leave the house and by the click the of a button are helping the less fortunate in the other side of the world.”
Cllr Kelly concluded: “I would like to congratulate Trócaire for all their efforts and help in emergencies and disasters that have affected many parts of world in the past twelve months. The work they carry out is invaluable.”
