The Derry “LondonDerry” Doire has taken fifth place in the fifth race of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.
The race was won by Henri Lloyd which finished 11 hours ahead of the Derry entry.
OneDLL secured second place ahead of the Chinese entry Qingdao.
Vicky Ellis, skipper of Switzerland, revealed they secured fourth spot after a “big challenge” from the Derry Clipper.
She said: “The Derry ‘LondonDerry’ Doire was on our tail for the last 24 hours, and that pushed us harder as they put the pressure on and we had a tacking duel.
“When we came out of Stealth Mode, we were in a much better position than we thought we would be, after battling with big squalls for 24 hours which was a big challenge and some of the worst conditions I have ever sailed in.
“At times, Derry ‘LondonDerry’ Doire was right in sight and that kept everyone focused. The last 24 hours was really tough and tense.”
The remainder of the fleet will arrive into the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia over the next two days.
While in Sydney, the Derry Clipper will take part in the famous Rolex Sydney Hobart Boat Race on St Stephen’s Day before the start of Race 7 which will leave King’s Pier Marina on 29 December for the 1,200 mile sail to Brisbane.
