There’s music in the air in Derry’s Guildhall Square as a host of local talent takes to the band stand at the Christmas Market to add a bit of magic to the festivities.
The market opened this week featuring over 30 Alpine chalets filled to bursting with traditional Christmas gift ideas, and a wide array of delicious festive goodies.
Local choirs from schools and community groups, soloists and performers across the city will be spreading the yuletide cheer with beautiful performances of some festive favourites to entertain shoppers as they go about their business.
Tony Monaghan, Senior Economic Development Officer with Derry City Council, said the children would add some extra sparkle to the atmosphere at the market.
“We are delighted to be able to let the children take centre stage this year at our Christmas market,” he said.
“I know people are busy rushing about as the Christmas shopping really gets into full swing this week, so it will provide the perfect opportunity to take a moment to pause and soak up the festive atmosphere.
“I think it’s very fitting in our City of Culture year that we take the opportunity to showcase again some of the fantastic talent that has gained Derry’s reputation as a city of music. I would encourage everyone to come along to enjoy some beautiful carols, and enjoy a relaxed and more traditional shopping experience.”
Groups featuring over the next week include choirs from Lumen Christi, St Mary’s, Balougry, Cumber and the Colmcille Choir, as well as a whole host of talented solo singers and musicians.
They will entertain crowds every day from now until December 21, when the market comes to a close. There will also be a number of fun children’s activities open to all in the Guildhall on Sunday 15th and Friday 20th of December.
The market is open daily from 10.00am – 9.00pm and boasts a wide array of goods this year, with some beautiful craft works and bespoke gift ranges that can’t be found on the high street, but make perfect and more personal alternatives to regular gift ideas. From hand crafted pottery, intricate jewellery pieces, glassware and crocheted cushions there really is something to suit every taste.
