There were moving scenes at a memorial service held yesterday in Ballymagroarty in Derry.
The inaugural event was organised by the Ballymagroarty Hazelbank Community Partnership and Ballymagroarty Community Association to remember all those from the local community who had passed away.
During the event, a memorial tree was plant on the grass area next to the community centre at Shaw Court.
The Ballymagroarty community has been congratulated by local SInn Fine Councillor Eric McGinley for organising the event.
Cllr. McGinley said: “The Ballymagroarty Hazelbank Community Partnership and Ballymagroarty Community Association came together to organise this inaugural remembrance event for all those from the local community who have passed on.”
Cllr McGinley added the memorial tree would serce as a “permanent reminder” to those who had lost loved ones.
He added: “This spot will hopefully be the focus of an annual remembrance event.”
Cllr McGinley concluded: “Sunday’s ceremony highlighted again the strong community spirit which exists within the Ballymagroarty area and I would take this opportunity to commend the organisers and residents who made this event possible.”
