The police car which crashed in Derry at the weekend was responding to an “emergency domestic incident,” the PSNI in the city has revealed.
Three officers had a miraculous escape when the unmarked patrol car they were travelling in left the road and ended up on its side at the “Bywash” on Greggan Road in the Rosemount area shortly before 3.30am yesterday.
All three, two male and a female, were able to free themselves from the badly damaged vehicle. They were all taken to Altnagelvin Hospital for treatment and released a short time later.
Local residents have told of hearing a “loud bang” and witnessing the officers helping each other out of the car.
One woman who went to the aid of the injured officers described their escape as “a miracle.”
Police have thanked those who went to help the officers.
A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police would like to thank local residents who left their homes to offer assistance to the officers.”
The spokesperson also appealed to anyone who witnessed the crash telephone police on 0845 600 8000.
