A hard-hitting storyline in a top television soap has prompted police in Derry to warn householders to beware of bogus callers to their homes.
In last night’s edition of Eastenders, elderly Dot Cotton was robbed of all her savings by two bogus callers who tricked their way into her Albert Square home.
A PSNI spokesperson said while such incidents were a “rare occurrence” here, householders should always check the identification of unexpected callers to “prevent fiction becoming a reality.”
Members of the public have been advised to use a “Quick Check” call scheme if in doubt about callers to their home.
The spokesperson said: “A genuine caller will have no problem showing you their ID but if you have doubts about anyone who has called to your home unannounced you can call ‘Quick Check’ which is a scheme that can be used to check the identity of callers by telephoning freephone 0800 013 22 90.
“A call centre operator will answer that number and can quickly check with any service provider if the person at the door is a genuine caller from that particular company.”
The spokesperson added: “Also an alternative source for information on fraud and internet crime and how to report it, is available on the ‘Action Fraud’ website: http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/ or by telephoning 0300 123 2040. In an emergency, call 999.”
