Derry is still the North’s unemployment blackspot despite a drop in the number of people here “signing on.”
Figures released by the Department of Enterprise Trade and Investment (DETI) show the number of people who claimed unemployment related benefits in November was 5,9774 – a drop of 124 from October which represents 8.4% of the working age population.
The total number of people claiming the dole in Derry now stands at 5974 – 8.4% of the city’s working age population.
The number of people claiming unemployment benefits across the North fell by 1,314 in November – the total out of work is now 58,805.
Commentators say the drop in the number of people out of work is due in part to extra staff being employed by stores in the run-up to Christmas.
However, there was a significant increase in the number of confirmed redundancies notices.
Last month 138 people were notified that they were to lose their jobs – compared to 50 in October.
