Santa Claus took to two wheels today to join Environment Minister Mark H Durkan and Derry Mayor Martin Reilly at the official opening the Waterside Greenway
The 3.5 mile walkway/cycle path runs along the east bank of the River Foyle from Ebginton Barracks via the Peace Bridge to Foyle Bridge.
The £1.8m project awarded £1.2m in Big Lottery funding via the environmental charity Sustrans, which works to promote sustainable and healthy transport alternatives.
Derry City Council also provided funding for the project along with the Northern Ireland Environment Agency and the Department for Regional Development’s Travelwise NI.
Mayor Reilly said the completed Greenway would offer users the opportunity to explore new parts of the city whilst offering an alternative and easier commute to work.
He said: “The completion of the Waterside Greenway is a much welcomed addition to the city’s expanding network of greenways and will make a huge difference in how people travel around the city.”
Mayor Reily new amenity wouldl also benefit leisure users offering some of the best views of the River Foyle.
He added: “This pathway provides a traffic free green corridor along the east bank of the Foyle for the whole family to enjoy, as well as an area for tourists to explore the city on foot.”
Also at today’s official opening ceremony, which took place in St Columb’s Park House, were Ross McGill from Sustrans, Derry City Council officials including City Engineer John Kelpie and pupils from Oakgrove Integrated Primary School in the Waterside.
