Former Derry City favourite James McClean has become a father for the first time.
The Creggan man, who now plays for Wigan Athletic in the Sky Bet Championship in England, took to twitter earlier today to tell the world long-time girlfriend Erin Connor had given birth to a healthy baby girl in the early hours of this morning.
The couple, who got engaged last year, have named their little bundle of joy Allie Mae, who weighed in at 6 lbs 9 ozs at 1.15am.
In his tweet, the Republic of Ireland star said Erin, a nursing student at Northumbria University, and baby “are good” and that he was “overwhelmed.”
He added: “Proudest day of my life.”
The joyous occasion was just what the Derry man needed as it came only hours after his first goal for Wigan, who he joined during the summer, no longer stands as the game against Sheffield Wednesday was abandoned due to adverse weather.
Although the baby was due around about now, there was no suggestion she was on her way when McClean put the ball in the Sheffield net in the 24th minute of the game.
Erin celebrated the goal by also taking to twitter to say: “So proud of my babe – woohoo get in there.”
Meanwhile, it is understood McClean’s team-mates are putting together a special “baby celebration” routine if the Derry man finds the back of the net against Reading on Saturday.
