It’s only a few more sleeps now until Santa arrives, and it won’t just be the sound of sleigh bells ringing over the next few days as the tills go into overdrive ahead of Derry’s final shopping weekend before Christmas.
The city centre is filled to bursting with keen shoppers on the hunt for seasonal bargains, and despite the ongoing financial chill, retailers are expecting a real surge in trade this weekend as the last minute buyers hit the streets.
City Centre Initiative Manager Jim Roddy has been out and about talking to local businesses, who are making the most of the festive boom, and he praised all partners involved in creating a fantastic experience throughout the city for shoppers.
He said: “There is a great atmosphere in the city this year and I’ve been hearing some very positive feedback from retailers, despite the economic climate.
“There has been a lot of effort put in this year by all the partners and agencies involved to ensure that the city is putting its best foot forward.
“We have learnt a lot over the years and have put that experience to good use this year, and without doubt a joint approach to marketing the city is the way forward.
“We have established strong partnerships which work, and have a clearly defined shared goal in promoting the city.
“Derry has a very strong offer when it comes to retail experiences with some excellent shopping centres located throughout the city, each offering a whole host of shopping options.
“As well as the big high street names we also have many independent retailers in areas such as Pump Street, Carlisle Road and Spencer Road who offer some high quality ranges and craft works, and where shoppers can pick up something really special.
“The Christmas Market in Guildhall Square features a wide array of bespoke and niche goods, and which is adding to the festive atmosphere for shoppers with live entertainment and some alternative gift ideas.
“Planning for the market began early last year, and any concerns have been effectively addressed through a series of meetings with traders in the area, making it a positive experience for all involved.
“The positive profile of the city has definitely risen throughout our year as the inaugural UK City of Culture, and we are enjoying an upsurge in visitors to the city which naturally impacts on business.”
Mr Roddy concluded: “As a city Derry can’t be beaten when it comes to ambience and with extra features such as the new city lighting strategy enhancing our historical and iconic buildings, it’s both a beautiful and buzzing destination, with plenty to offer visitors this year.”
City Mayor Martin Reilly said he was delighted to see the town so busy over the festive period.
He added: “I think that Derry has something to offer everyone, and I think this year in particular there is an amazing and positive atmosphere in the city.
“I would encourage shoppers to support all local businesses where they can this Christmas. I think there is something special about being able to interact with the people who have personally crafted gifts in the Christmas market, and to know that people’s hard earned money is making a difference in terms of supporting other local people.”
He concluded: “And the fact that by shopping in our local centres we are also creating demand for, and supporting, local jobs is an added bonus.”
