The future of boxing in Derry has a bright future, according to SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey who says a major development programme will ensure the sport will pack plenty of punches in the future.
Mr Ramsey, referring to the work between local clubs, the Council and DCAL (Department Culture, Arts and Leisure) on a development programme for the Derry City Council area, said along with £1m investment, facilities for the sport would be greatly improved.
Mr Ramsey said: “I’m delighted Derry City Council is working on this major development programme, which has yet to be finalised.
“I’m also pleased that over £1m of funding will be invested in Council facilities, some that house boxing clubs in the city, in the next number of years. This will significantly improve the facilities for the local boxing clubs.
“As well as having access to Council’s Sports Development programme and annual grant aid programme, boxing clubs will also have access to the new contact sport facility in St Columb’s Park as part of that redevelopment in March 2015. This resource will house a Sport NI coach, dedicated to strength and conditioning for high performance athletes in the city.”
Mr Ramsey concluded: “The new development programme will benefit each and every club in the City and district with both capital and equipment funding so we can invest in the sport going forward and ensure our facilities are not only viable, but ready for the future.”
