The former St Peter’s High School in Derry is to be demolished within weeks, according to a former mayor of the city.
Sinn Féin Councillor Kevin Campbell said he had been assured by a Diocesan spokesperson for the Catholic Church the building at Southway on the outskirts of Creggan estate work to level the former secondary school would begin at the start of next month.
Cllr Campbell, has been leading calls for the vacant site to be cleared, has welcomed the news.
He said: “Over recent months I have been in discussions with various bodies in relation to the demolition of the former St Peter’s school at Southway. It became very clear there were a number of issues around the demolition and clearing of the site that had to be resolved.
“Back in October I have received notice that the tendering process for the demolition of the site was to begin.
I am pleased to announce following discussions with Diocesan spokesperson for the Catholic Church in Derry, that the tendering process will be concluded this week. And that the demolition of the old school will begin at the start of January once the holidays are over.”
Cllr Campbell concluded: “It has been a long process and a lot of agencies have been involved in getting to this stage. I would like to thank everyone involved in bringing this about.”
There have been widespread calls for building to be demolished ever since St Peter’s closed at the end of June this year due to a number fires on the site.
Those calls intensified in September after a major fire.
