It is looking unlikely we will have our first White Christmas since 2010 – but a Yellow Christmas is very much on the cards!
Derry is will once again be placed on “yellow alert” ahead of a return of gale-force winds over the next few days.
Today will see sunny spells and heavy showers in fresh or strong south-westerly winds. The maximum temperature will be 9°C.
An area of very deep low pressure is expected to develop in the Atlantic tomorrow which will bring very strong winds and heavy rain from Monday morning through to late Tuesday morning.
The Met Office has warned of the potential of widespread gales with gusts of 70 mph for much of Northern Ireland with gusts of 80-90 mph possible.
A Met Office spokesperson said the public should be aware of the potential for significant disruption to travel due to the very strong winds and also the risk of some flooding due to the heavy rain.
Christmas Day is likely to be rather cold and windy with sunny spells and showers which will be heavy and wintry at times.
Showers are forecast to continue into St Stephen’s Day before more persistent rain and strong winds pushes in from the west later with hill snow.
Thereafter, it will remain rather unsettled and often windy, with a risk of the very strong winds and heavy rain.
Temperatures generally near normal however incursions of colder air could bring snow to low levels rather than just over high ground.
