SPARTAN BOGLE TAKES TOP HONOURS AT GRANSHA CROSS COUNTRY

Local athlete Alan Bogle saw off a strong field to take the honours at the North West Cross Country held at Gransha on Saturday last.

The event, the fifth race in the Athletics Northern Ireland Cross Country League 2013/14 was hosted by City of Derry Spartans and attracted leading athletes from throughout the North.

In what was an exciting men’s race, Bogle saw off Alan O’Hara (North Belfast Harriers), Scott Rankin (Foyle Valley AC), Chris McGuiness (Foyle Valley AC), Emmett McGinty (City of Derry AC) and John Lenahan (City of Derry AC) to take the tape in a time of 19.27 for the 6k course.

The orienteering expert and international mountain runner covered had three seconds to spare from Rankin. O’Hara came in third in 19.35 pipping McGuinness for the final podium place a second.

The ladies race was won North Belfast Harriers’ Commonwealth Games qualifier Gladys Ganiel O’Neill in 21:31 (1st place) with Lauren Quee (unattached) second and Mary Meade (North Belfast Harriers) third.

In the team standings, City of Derry Spartans continued their impressive start to the Cross Country League, winning both the male and female team events.
