Derry athletes are expected to be among the frontrunners at the prestigious Greencastle 5K taking place at the Tyrone venue later today.
The event, which has attracted some of Northern Ireland’s top athletes in the past, is in its 28th year and the organisers are hopeful the extremely generous prize fund, coupled with the tradition of the race, will attract record numbers.
Foyle Valley’s Keith Shiels is the big Derry hopeful.
The Creggan runner has been one of the country’s top performers in 2013, winning at least 18 races.
However, arguably his best performance was a a third place finish and half marathon personal best (1:09:32) at the Athletics NI Half Marathon Championships at the Ards Half Marathon, where he also collected a bronze medal.
On top of this personal best, the Foyle Valley AC man has recorded four other personal bests this term, over 3,000m (8:47.82), 5k (15:11), 5m (25:21) and 10k (30:59).
Add to that, his stunning performance to win the Waterside Half Marathon in his home town.
City of Derry Sparta’s John Lenahan is also expected to be in contention for category prizes.
