Martin McGuinness has sent “best wishes” to former Northern Ireland First Minister Ian Paisley who has been admitted to hospital.
The former DUP leader was admitted yesterday to the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald for what his family say are “necessary tests”.
In a statement, Dr Paisley’s wife Eileen said he was “in good spirits” and asked for “his privacy to be respected.”
The 87-year-old served as the North’s First Minister with Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness as Deputy First Minister.
Today, the leading Sinn Fein representative took to social media to wish Dr Paisley “good health.”
In a tweet, Mr McGuinness said: “Best wishes to Ian Paisley Snr, hopefully his stay in hospital will be short & he will soon be returned. home to his family in good health.”
Dr Paisley stood down as First Minister in 2008 and ended 60 years of full-time ministry in January 2012.
The following month, he spent a week on a life support machine suffering from heart failure.
In addition to co-founding the DUP and leading it from 1971 to 2008, he is a founding member and was moderator of the Free Presbyterian Church from 1951 to 2008.
