Taxi operators in Derry have been called on to put a “freeze” on rent increases on their drivers.
The call comes from Emmet Doyle, SDLP candidate in next year’s local government elections, who has pledged to work with taxi drivers in Derry to ensure reforms being implemented by Minister Mark H Durkan will benefit all who provide the service in the city.
Mr Doyle, who will be seeking election in The Moor ward, said he was committed to ensuring drivers could “really benefit in their pockets” from the reforms being put in place by the Environment Minister.
He added: “Taxi drivers in our city provide a valuable public service in often difficult circumstances which are often hidden.
“Many of those involved in the industry work in excess of sixty hours per week just to earn a living wage.
“Costs for maintaining a vehicle as well as office rents and other costs weigh heavy on drivers and their families financially, and when the fare structure comes into place in 2014, we have a duty to maximise take-home pay for drivers and ensure that not only is the industry fairer, but that it is profitable for the drivers and not for office owners.
“In that light, I am calling on all office owners to commit to freezing rents for the foreseeable future, especially after the fare reforms are implemented – I can see no justifiable reason why rents should increase and it is incumbent on owners to exercise responsibility in rent so the industry is stable for the future.”
Mr Doyle concluded: “I stand with drivers who are under pressure and will do all I can to protect drivers jobs and their income.”
