The heartbroken family of a popular young Derry man who has passed away suddenly have said they are overwhelmed by the support they are receiving from friends and the kind-hearted people of Derry.
David Farthing (38), from Bracken Park in Galliagh, fell ill on Saturday last and died yesterday in Altnagelvin Hospital where he worked as a porter.
His younger brother, Ronan, said: “He was my older brother, the best in the world. He was my hero.”
He added: “The support and sympathy we are receiving is overwhelming.”
Ronan revealed David’s organs have been given up for donation.
He said: “We think by donating his organs something good will come out of what has happened. David would have approved as he will be giving a life to someone else.”
Ronan said the sudden passing of David had come as a “great shock” as he was a fitness fanatic.
He said: “He would have played football when he was younger and kept himself fit. He was always going to the gym.”
David’s family and friends have paying tribute to him on Facebook.
His cousin Daniel McDaid says being “devastated is an understatement.”
He added: “Never get over what happened. You were a true gentleman and an amazing friend.”
Angela Singh says: “Absolutely gutted for what has happened to such a lovely man – life is so cruel.”
Mal McIntyre says he only knew David for four years but in that short time he made a “massive impact” on his life.
He adds: “He was an amazing man.”
The eldest son of Sheila, who sadly passed away in 1994, and David, David is survived by his 11-year-old son, younger brothers Ronan and Darren, sister Shauna and his niece (his godchild).
A fanatical fan of his beloved Glasgow Celtic, he was a regular visitor to Parkhead to see his heroes play.
He was educated at Slievemore Primary School and St Peter’s High School.
Arrangements for David’s funeral have yet to be finalised.
His wake will take place at his home 34A Bracken Park.
