The PSNI has issued a flood warning ahead of heavy rain and high winds predicted over the weekend.
Derry has been put on “yellow alert” by the Met Office who are warning the public to expect wet and windy conditions.
A Met Office spokesperson said: “The public should be aware of the risk of localised watercourse or surface water flooding.”
The spokesperson said a developing Atlantic low pressure system was expected to bring heavy rain with 10mm to 20mm quite likely.
The spokesperson added: “Given existing levels of saturation, this could lead to some flooding.”
Meanwhile, the PSNI has revealed they are currently coordinating a multi agency planning team in anticipation of a tidal coastal surge at midday tomorrow. Saturday and Sunday which has the potential to cause flooding in a number of areas..
Assistant Chief Constable Stephen Martin said: “The combination of heavy rain, strong winds and high tides beginning tomorrow and lasting throughout the weekend has created the potential for flooding in a number of coastal areas across Northern Ireland.
ACC Martin, former police commander in Derry, said they were working with a number of agencies, including the Office of First Minister and Deputy First Minister, Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, the Rivers Agency, Road Service, Northern Ireland Water, Northern Ireland Electricity, British Telecom and Translink to ensure they were “well placed” to deal with all eventualities.
ACC Martin said while the Belfast area was most at risk, he asked all members of the public to stay away from coastal paths and walkways and to drive with extreme caution.
He added: “We will issue further information and we will, as usual, be issuing regular traffic and travel updates via the media.”
